Carangelo Belcanto Academy, founded in Vienna in 2002 by Maestro Antonio Carangelo, is a point of reference for advanced and professional opera singers.
Organise Masterclasses of a professional level and offer private lessons.
Conducted by Antonio Carangelo, they take place in different European countries and address advanced students, semiprofessional and professional singers. The main focus rests on the Belcanto-Singing, to cultivate its technique and expand its interpretation. The participants have the opportunity to learn from a creative exchange with an experienced opera-singer. The Masterclasses always conclude with a final concert.

Antonio Carangelo was born in Lecce, Italy. He had his musical training at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève and the Accademia d'arte Lirica, Osimo (Italy). He perfected his vocal technique with the famous tenor Mario del Monaco and Maestro Ettore Campogalliani. He performed leading tenor roles such as Rigoletto, Traviata, Macbeth, Ernani, Lucia di Lammermoor, Tosca, La Bohème, Gianni Schicchi, Madame Butterfly, Werther and Don Giovanni among others. He sang in France, Switzerland, England, Italy, Norway, Japan and the USA. In recent years he has dedicated himself to intensive vocal teaching; he founded the “Carangelo Belcanto Academy” in Vienna and leads Masterclasses all over the world, as well as judging European singing competitions. Many of Maestro Carangelo's students are singing leading roles at opera houses all around the world such as Vienna State Opera, Volksoper Wien, Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Fenice, La Scala, the Salzburg Festival, Covent Garden, Teatro Colon and Folkoperan (Stockholm).
In all the years of my time as student and later in my professional singing career I have not met anyone who is more competent as a singing teacher than Antonio Carangelo. His original education as a singer himself in the tradition of the Scuola di Canto Italiano with the greatest masters of his time and his constant continuous work in developing the understanding of the mechanisms of classical singing are perfectly pared by his pedagogical and didactical skills.
Antonio Carangelo's solid technique, energy, engagement and teaching-skills guided me through my singing studies and later on in my professional career. The knowledge he has passed on to me has given me support every single time I stand on stage. His unique and natural way of teaching resumes the Italian opera tradition, of which he is one of its finest ambassadors I have had the honour to meet. For me Maestro Carangelo has been a true teacher and mentor on many different levels and I hope many young singers will have the opportunity to learn from him as much as I did.
The method of Maestro Carangelo is based on the right balance of muscles. Not just in how to relax or use them, but finding the right tension that is necessary to have a healthy instrument and a complete vocal range. Maestro Carangelo is a tireless worker, and his compromise and generosity with the student is devotional in the deepest meaning of the word.
The first time I met Maestro Carangelo, I had no idea what it really really meant to be a “tenor“. And without any doubts he helped me to understand this and form me not only as a singer but more importantly as an artist. Although I am just 25 years old, I was very lucky to meet lots of coaches and singing teachers, and I can say that Maestro Carangelo has the most profound and the most healthy approach to form a solid singing technique.
Maestro Carangelo is an amazing teacher. I have never meet a singer with such genuine dedication and extensive knowledge of the art of singing, both on how the vocal apparatus works and the interpretation of different styles (especially the Bel Canto era). He has the unique ability to listen to, and observe each student’s particular need and he works very individually with every student, whether a total beginner or a professional singer. Maestro Carangelo has completely changed my approach to singing. He has given me a much deeper understanding of my own voice and he has helped me enormously in my profession as a singer which I am very grateful for. The only thing I regret is that I didn't meet Maestro Carangelo when I first started singing.
